COMPTON HIGH SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

Compton High School is excited to announce its application for candidacy as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, specifically implementing the Middle Years Programme (MYP).  The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world while emphasizing learning in a global context.  IB students are expected to learn about our common humanity and the shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate explorations of subjects.  These tenets are clearly expressed in the IB Mission Statement:

The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.  To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The IB Learner Profile further defines the expected attributes of students as they navigate the International Baccalaureate framework which includes being:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-Minded
  • Caring
  • Risk Takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

There are many benefits to becoming an IB World School for Compton High School students in their academic studies as well as beyond the campus.  Essentially, students will:

  • be encouraged to think independently and drive their own learning
  • take part in programmes of education that can lead them to some of the highest-ranking universities around the world
  • become more culturally aware, through the development of a second language
  • be able to engage with people in an increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world.

As this is an exciting time for Compton High School students, teachers, and its community, here are some important things to know as we begin this journey:

  • Compton High School will be applying for candidacy for the Middle Years Programme (MYP)
  • The MYP is a five-year program beginning in the 6th grade and ending in the 10th grade
  • Compton High School will begin with its 9th and 10th-grade students

As we embark upon this journey, our students and staff will make many discoveries about themselves, their beliefs, their thought processes and perseverance.  We look forward to preparing students at Compton High School in a manner which fosters the global mindset that will allow students to be positively integrated into their communities, now and forever.
